Deirdre Blakeýs podcast, top of this issueýs media stack, reports on Free Software Foundationýs recent release of version 3 of the GNU Public License. The new release deals in greater detail than prior revs with patent issues, including a method for retaliation against companies that use patents to co-opt bodies of GPL-licensed software employed in commercial products, thus limiting future use of these components. In features, David Orme, leader of the Eclipse Visual Editor project, and colleagues Joe Winchester and Gili Mendel, both of IBM, describe progress on the EVE ý a framework for building Eclipse-based GUI builders. The Eclipse Visual Editor comes out of the box with support for Javaýs AWT and Swing Java foundation classes, as well as the extensive Eclipse Standard Widget Toolkit; and has been further extended by IBM with support for their Application User Interface Markup Language. Current sub-projects are rapidly extending the powers of this unique tool to Java mobile device UI models and XML-based GUI frameworks.
