Jinfonet Software has released JReport 4, a Java reporting tool. New
in this release is viaWeb Designer, a web-based report designer that allows
the creation and modification of reports directly from the browser. Also
new is a page-level security that allows control of which subset of a
report users will see, and output to XML, making JReport fully compatible
with this standard for online business information exchange. Additionally,
this release has a faster PDF generator, which is added to the list of
output formats that also includes HTML, DHTML, Excel, RTF, Email, CSV,
Applet, and PostScript.

NEC Electronics has announced a 8-bit microcontroller design contest.
The "Esprit de K0RE" contest invites design engineers to submit
embedded designs using NEC's popular uPD78F9418A flash
microcontroller, a member of NEC's K0S family of 8-bit microcontrollers.
Qualified applicants will receive a free NEC K0RE System Design Kit (which
includes an assembler, C compiler, simulator with virtual hardware support,
flash programmer, and an NEC K0RE9418 target board with a uPD78F9418A
8-bit flash microcontroller) to help create embedded designs that are
unique, clever, and code efficient. The contest will run for six months,
and winners will be selected from 500 qualified designs. The first-place
winner will receive an NEC-Mitsubishi 50-inch Plasma Sync flat-panel display,
valued at approximately $8500. The second-place winner will receive an
NEC-Mitsubishi 20-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display
(LCD) valued at approximately $2000.
